Empowering Women to Achieve Sustainable Business Development
Gender equality key driver of sustainable business development
Indonesia’s Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection is encouraging the business world to embrace gender equality. The Ministry firmly believes that only by empowering and including women can Indonesia attain sustainable business development. According to the Ministry, the country’s economic statistics are supportive of this view and the need for inclusive business practices.
Currently, there are 64.2 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. They contribute 60% of the national GDP (gross domestic product), amounting to more than IDR8.5 trillion. MSMEs in Indonesia also represent 97% of the workforce, forming the backbone of the national economy. Statistics show that women own and run 64% of these MSMEs, making them crucial drivers of economic growth.
The Ministry, along with other institutions such as Bank Indonesia, firmly believe in the need for female-run MSMEs. They have the potential to ensure economic expansion while creating a new group of future leaders for Indonesia.
Embracing International Goals
The Ministry’s message to participants of the recent B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards is to instil gender perspectives in business creation. Balancing the gender perspective in implementing programmes and initiatives is essential, especially to attain the 5th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is the United Nations’ 5th SDG. One of its primary aims is to promote sustainable business development in the business world by facilitating gender equality. This necessitates inclusive policies and initiatives to empower women and girls.
Currently, there needs to be more access and opportunity for women in the Indonesian business scene. This especially holds true in their representation of strategic positions in the commercial world. The Ministry is keen to boost Indonesia’s commercial power by empowering women via business inclusion initiatives. Not only will it achieve the 5th SGD, but it will also contribute significantly to the economy.
