Aceh to Play Bigger Role in Indonesia’s Offshore Oil & Gas Industry
Aceh is expected to take on a larger role in Indonesia’s offshore oil & gas industry following a new agreement between upstream regulator SKK Migas and the Aceh Oil and Gas Management Agency (BPMA).
The two agencies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering the joint management of offshore oil and gas working areas located between 12 and 200 nautical miles from Aceh’s coastline.
A New Beginning
The agreement marks an important step for the region. He explained that Aceh will no longer only observe the use of offshore energy resources but will now be directly involved in their management and development.
BPMA Expands Offshore Role
The MoU was signed during the Indonesia Petroleum Association (IPA) Convention and Exhibition held from May 20 to 22. This means that BPMA will now have four important responsibilities under the agreement. These include coordinating with government agencies and companies involved in upstream oil and gas projects, and in doing so, supporting public communication, and helping with permit approval processes in offshore working areas.
Strengthening Offshore Oversight
BPMA will also receive copies of approved development plans for offshore projects managed by cooperation contract contractors (KKKS). This will allow the agency to stay informed and involved in major offshore activities. The partnership is expected to support both regional and national interests. He added that Aceh’s involvement could improve coordination, monitoring, and management of offshore operations in the region.
The agreement is also expected to strengthen infrastructure & energy growth in Aceh by increasing investment and improving the management of offshore energy resources. Higher production levels could lead to larger revenue-sharing funds for the region under existing government regulations. The collaboration will help optimise offshore production, increase regional income, and support Indonesia’s long-term energy security goals. A lot to look forward to in the future for Aceh.
