Mobility Improves as MRT Usage Increases Post-Pandemic in Indonesia
The Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has seen a significant increase in passengers as life returns back to normal after the pandemic.
According to data from PT MRT Jakarta, the system recorded daily ridership of around 50 thousand in 2022. This is higher than the average ridership of 40,000 the government targeted earlier the past year.
MRT Being More Important Than Ever
The phase-1 project of the MRT system was launched in Jakarta in March 2019. Since then, it’s become an essential mode of transportation for many commuters in the city. The system currently consists of one North-South line with 13 stations. The goal is to complete it by 2030 and then start working on another East-West Line.
Protocols Eased, But Some Still Remain
During the pandemic, the MRT system implemented various health and safety protocols to ensure passenger safety. These included regular disinfection of trains and stations, compulsory masks, and limited passenger capacity.
Currently, some restrictions like the one on communication still apply. Commuters aren’t allowed to talk on the phone or to other passengers during the ride. Some actually see this as a positive thing; since the rule also keeps sound pollution and chaos in check.
Attempt to Make Travel More Accessible and Greener
The annual growth rate of vehicles in Indonesia is increasing and has done for some time. During 2013, the country was about to reach a complete traffic gridlock, had alternatives like the MRT wasn’t created.
The MRT, as it serves thousands of passengers each day, is also a way for the Indonesian government to keep the number of private vehicles and carbon emissions to a minimum. This, along with the recent EV incentives, can largely benefit the environment.
MRT Helping Businesses
As MRT usage increases, it’s also going to benefit countless businesses in the Jakarta area. People can travel more freely, and employees can adhere to strict discipline to not miss their train. Also, unfamiliar travellers can now reach their destination with more certainty.
Boost for Foreign Entrepreneurs
For everyone who’s had their idea on hold, it’s now seen as the perfect time to start a business in Indonesia. As MRT usage increases post-pandemic, people will be moving more often, it’ll be easier for companies to get employees.
